Many people around the world—and in the United Kingdom, which was where this study came from—wait until they experience pain, suffering or other symptoms before they see a dentist. Missing a dental appointment, however, can lead to a higher risk of gum disease or decay. Another problem may be a later diagnosis of a potentially fatal condition, such as cancer—something that could have been diagnosed much earlier with a dental visit.
The cost or lack of dental coverage is one of the main reasons most people skip the dentist. But cost shouldn’t be an issue because although someone may save money in the short team, the person will end up spending more later to fix the problem. With dental insurance, the cost of the dental visit is alleviated.
A person should visit the dentist once every 6 to 9 months, based on most recommendations. The poll indicated that only slightly more than one-quarter of the people surveyed visited the dentist at least every year.
